Student Employment - Sears think[box] at Case Western Reserve University

Sears think[box] at Case Western Reserve University combines cutting-edge prototyping and fabrication equipment with a entrepreneurial support network to help students, staff, faculty, and even the public turn their ideas into reality. The think[box] student Technicians make that experience possible by using their time, talents, and training to assist and coach thousands of visitors every month. Not only does think[box] need students who have an aptitude for technical work, each and every student needs the high level emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills to mentor people through the challenges of design and making. We also place a high value on a diverse workforce - Technicians are our ambassadors and experience shows us they make think[box] a safe and welcome environment for all. That's why we composed this base for managing the hiring process at think[box]. When the student first submits the application form the base hides their identifying information so we can remove our biases from the equation. Instead, we focus on what the students tell us about themselves in their essay questions. Three managers independently examine and rate these anonymous narratives for clues about the student's attitudes, skills, and experiences. The best candidates are invited to come in for an interview with the three managers. After the interviews, the managers work together to craft the Technician teams confident that they're selecting the best of the best.

Course Scheduling at Harvey Mudd College, Mathematics Department

The Department of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College is tasked with submitting a class schedule to the registrar's office each semester. This is typically a very cumbersome process, requiring multiple worksheets, several calendars, and many back-and-forth emails with faculty. Airtable centralizes all of this information into one intuitive system, allowing administrators, faculty, and department executives to stay informed throughout the scheduling process. Some key features of this base include: - A hierarchy structure of tables, Courses -> Sections -> Classes, which allows the team to aggregate important information at each level (e.g., of Sections per Professor, of Classes per Course, etc.). - A calendar view on the Classes table, "Class Scheduling", which is sent to faculty to inform them where fellow professors are located throughout the semester. - A historical table, "Past Teaching Credits", which allows the team to view professor course loads over multiple academic years. - A table, "Service Credits", which keeps track of non-teaching responsibilities (e.g., Thesis Advisor, Department Chair, etc.). With Airtable, course scheduling becomes a dynamic process - as the schedule is tweaked, data is updated across the entire base. Customized views and blocks act as dashboards that quickly surface important information for each member of the team.
